29 go to Shanghai

Title: 《29少IN上海》Twenty-nine Youngsters in Shanghai
Location: Shanghai Oriental Art Center
Date: 26-28 April 2013
Description: Twenty-nine junior performers of the Beijing Jingju Theater break all the records in Shanghai! Three days, three monstre jingju performances: young successors of every great Beijing Opera school occupy the stage in turns.

1. Full edition《白蛇传》Baishe Zhuan (Tale of the White Snake)

Don’t expect Tian Han’s newly written 1958 edition, but:
- Zhang Xinyue’s 张馨月 (Mei school)《游湖借伞》You Hu Jie San (Boating on the lake, lending the umbrella)
- Guo Wei’s 郭玮 (Cheng school)《索夫》Suo Fu (Searching for the Husband)
- Zhang Shujing’s 张淑景《水漫金山》Shui Man Jinshan (Flooding Jinshan), personally thought by Liu Xiurong 刘秀荣
- Dou Xiaoxuan’s 窦晓璇 (disciple of Du Jinfang)《断桥》Duanqiao (Broken Bridge)
- Rarity! Wu Haoyi’s 吴昊颐 Zhao school《合钵》He Bo (Imprisoned into the Copper Bowl), including the aria starting 亲儿的脸,吻儿的腮, better known as “小乖乖” (xiao guai guai), trademarked by Zhao Yanxia 赵燕侠. You can download the mp3 [HERE], worth to hear!
- Jiang Yishan’s 姜亦珊 (Zhang school)《祭塔》Ji Ta (Offering Sacrifice at the Pagoda)
Special treat for female spectators: Zhan Lei 詹磊 and Wei Xuelei 魏学雷 as Crane Boy and Deer Boy.

2. Full edition《伍子胥》Wu Zixu

This cast was a bit predictable: “Little 7″ Tan Zhengyan 谭正岩 (Tan school), Zhang Jianfeng 张建峰 (Xi school) and Yang Shaopeng 杨少彭 (Yang school) will perform in 《战樊城》Zhan Fancheng (The Battle of Fancheng),《长亭会》Changting Hui (Meeting in the Long Pavilion) and 《文昭关》Wen Zhaoguan (The Zhao Pass) respectively.
Many of these performers were her classmates, so although she’s not a member of the Beijing troupe, P.Y. Wang (Wang Peiyu ) couldn’t be left out, she will sing《鱼藏剑》Yu Cang Jian (Sword Hidden in a Fish).¹
There’s more! The famous part in the Zhao Pass when Wu Yun’s beard suddenly turns from black to grey then white, will be performed by three people: Yang Shaopeng, Zhang Jianfeng and Wang Peiyu. Each time Wu comes out of the tent, not only his beard but his portrayer also will be different.

3. Whole edition《红鬃烈马》Hong Zong Lie Ma (Red-maned Galloping Horse) – there wasn’t one in ten years! 6 hours long!

Ten acts will be staged with eight Pingguis and eight Baochuans, I don’t know exactly which ones. Even hardcore jingju fans hardly can sit six hours without a break, so the curtain will fall after each act, leaving the audience enough time to have a drink or to rub their rear ends. Naturally, hot water and tea will be available, as well as taxis after the performance which ends after midnight.

Article: Dongfang daily 2013-03-12 (Trivia question: based on the fact that Tan Zhengyan is 185 cm tall, estimate the height of Wang Peiyu!)

Let’s see who can I identify on this picture… Wei Xuelei, Cao Yangyang , Li Xiaopei, Liu Mingzhe, Du Zhe, Zhang Xinyue, Tan Zhengyan, Zhai Mo, Wang Pan, Zhang Kai, Wang Xiaoli, Fang Xu, Zhang Yun, Zhan Lei, Guo Wei, ? , Zhang Jianfeng , Zhang Shujing, Wang Yige, Mu Yu, Zheng Xiao, Dou Xiaoxuan, Yang Shaopeng, Qiu Jirong, Wu Haoyi, Chang Qiuyue, Yu Shuai. One mystery individual left.

¹ After discussing this matter several times, the final conclusion is that the titles《鱼藏剑》Yu Cang Jian (Sword Hidden in a Fish) and 《鱼肠剑》Yu Chang Jian (Fish Gut Sword) are both acceptable. I see the latter more often, but I personally like the other one better. Moreover, the fish dish they hide the blade in doesn’t contain any intestines of the fish. :P (This was just a joke of course.)

I pay my score

I owe you two Wildboar Forests.

The first one is a production of the Jingju Theater of Tianjin. It was a bit hard to dig out from CCTV’s archives, but it was worth it. This one is the best contemporary version of this opera I’ve ever seen (of course this is just my private opinion). The sound is distorted when too loud (CCTV still doesn’t bother with peak search…), but it’s not that bad. Same for picture quality, somewhat blurry but watchable. The backgrounds are beautiful.
I made a DVD from this so I can watch it from bed, and it turned out surprisingly well. That’s what I call quality leisure time!

The second one is the recent performance of Beijing’s Youth Jingju Troupe with Du Zhe, Li Yang and Dou Xiaoxuan in the leading roles, and Li Guang as senior advisor. These files are quite pretty, and the production all in all is also fine. Here you can find a great set of stage pictures: bbs.cntv.cn

Jin Xiquan wishlist growing rapidly

Must… have… one… At least one copy of《白蛇传》Tale of the White Snake with Jin Xiquan.

There’s a chance CCTV11 will air the performances of this year’s “菊坛传响” (untranslatable without explanation) cultural week in Shanghai – Ding Xiaojun had a busy week! In three days (09.23-25) she starred in four operas: Silang Visits His Mother, Xie Yaohuan, Zhulian Fort, and Tale of the White Snake. In Xie Yaohuan, Jin Xiquan played the role of Yuan Xingjian, it would be good to bag that one too.

  • 2011/09/25 Tianchan Yifu Theater, Shanghai (2011 “菊坛传响” – Essence of National Culture Cultural Week) - w/Ding Xiaojun (丁晓君)

Another desirable performances:

  • Comrade-in-Arms Jingju Troupe, China National Jingju Company, Shanghai Jingju Troupe, Jingju Theater of Tianjin joint performances 2010 – w/Ding Xiaojun

– 2010/09/17 Mei Lanfang Grand Theater, Beijing
– 2010/09/29 Zhonghua Theater, Tianjin
– 2010/11/03-04 Oriental Art Center, Shanghai (2010 “菊坛传响” – Pujiang-Beijing Cultural Week)

  • 2005/01/12 Macau Cultural Center, Macau – w/ Shi Yihong

If anyone has a nice copy of the performance celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the PRC, titled “京韵流觞六十载” (2009/05/30-31), please send it my way. I’m especially interested in the concert of the second day, titled “再造传奇”, featuring traditional Beijing Opera excerpts; Jin Xiquan, Dou Xiaoxuan (窦晓璇) and Zhu Hong (朱虹) were performing the “Boating on the Lake” scene from the above mentioned play. (The first day was a symphonic revolutionary concert titled “红色经典”, that wasn’t bad either).
CCTV aired this concert in full and as a highlights edition before, but the videos still available on the CNTV website are very far from perfect. Download the boating scene here.

Another goodie to find is a copy of 《拾玉镯》Picking Up the Jade Bracelet, with him and Shi Yihong. The picture below looks so promising but I couldn’t find a single video. At least I found a link to 《打严嵩》Beating Yan Song with Chen Shaoyun and Shang Changrong in Xiquan’s blog – thank you!

Another happy moment: on 19 September 2011, many young performers were honored with Rising Star Award and Champion Award at the award giving ceremony of an invitational Beijing Opera contest. Mei Baojiu announced the winners, and I spotted many lovely faces. Tradition carried on I.

It’s worth to stay up late. *rubs hands*

As part of the one-week long celebration of National Day, the 1-2 October edition of Theater in the Air (CCTV11) is featuring a Beijing opera concert, titled 中国京剧流派传承班学员汇报演唱会.
I risk a translation like “Inheritance of China’s Beijing Opera Schools” (Students’ Concert). Keywords are “future generation” and “continued tradition” – cream of the crop young performers of the most well-known schools of Beijing Opera give account of what they learnt from their masters.

Click the links in the list to watch or download all videos in a rar file.

(edit) The full-length videos seem to be undownloadable, at least for me (as usual). Try your own luck here: Day1 Part1/2 ¦ Day1 Part2/2 :)
